Time means a great deal to every runner. It means everything to me, because most days miles don’t count; only minutes do. -Joe Henderson

Good thing those minutes count because I only got 15 of them in today. You better believe those 15 mean a great deal to me. The afternoon started with a trip to the Norfolk store to pick up a new pair of trainers.

I’ve been dating the same guy FOREVER, I’ve been eating the same cereal FOREVER, I’ve been wearing the same Nike Pegasus FOREVER. Guess what I left the store with?? A pair of Nike Pegasus AND Brooks Defyance. Never in a million years did I think I would switch up my shoes to something other than Nike. My racing flats are even Nike. I feel almost guilty but Mike Robinson, owner of Running, Etc. convinced me that rotating my shoes and trying something new would benefit me. I’ve been trusting his advice on shoes & training 100% since we met so with a huge SMILE on my face I left with not one but two new trainers. I always feel like it’s Christmas morning when I get new shoes….love that feeling.

I had exactly 15 minutes before I had to pick up my daughter. Perfect timing to test out the new Brooks without temptation to run further than I should at this point in the comeback trail. I ran through Ghent which is a very cool, fun section of Norfolk. While lacing up my new shoes I was scared. I was afraid that after 3 weeks off I would still have pain. The run went flawlessly! Pain-free and this morning (next day) I woke up without any swelling which was the norm two months ago.

Ended the day out with some favorite friends including these two girls, Hannah and Renee High who I can’t wait to be back running with.

Do you wear different shoes from different running companies? Stick to the same thing? How many shoes are in your rotation? What are your favorites?

  1. I wore Nike for years and more recently switched to Brooks Flow. I love them! I have had much fewer injury..can’t say that it is all due to the shoe… I am much stronger runner than I was a year ago while wearing Nike (I still love Nike) but very glad I tried something new! Happy running Kris! xo

    • Thanks Elisabeth! So happy to hear you have had fewer injuries! The Pure Flows sound so cool. Maybe I will try those eventually. I am so stubborn that I didn’t want to try anything new but I admit the Brooks felt really good yesterday. I’m excited to rotate them with my favorite Pegs. Have a great weekend!

  2. So glad you got to run yesterday Kris! How we can cherish even even the shortest of runs when coming back from injury. Glad to hear you didn’t over do it and you have no pain today. You’ll love your brooks. I was strictly Adidas up until last summer but switched to Brooks last July. I currently alternate between the Brooks Ghost and Green Silence for training and will probably start using the Pure Flow’s for racing soon. So happy for you about yesterday! Baby steps lead to big steps! Run Happy!

  3. I definitely have my favorites, but I rotate shoes all the time and I do think that helps me stay injury-free.
There is nothing like that first run out after a hiatus! I’m so happy for you…
Favorite shoes are Saucony Kinvara, Nike Free, Brooks Ghost, Mizuno Wave Rider, Nike Pegagus…Love them all!

  4. I use to run in Nikes but recently switched to Mizuno. I only have one trainer right now. I have heard it is good to rotate trainers but I figured I would wait until I am putting in more miles. I love getting new running shoes. I am in the market for new racers. Any recommendations? So glad the run went well!

    • I’ve been wearing the Nike Streak 3’s and love them! They are very responsive so when I feel like I need more cushioning then I wear the Lunaracers. Honestly I think I’ve worn every Nike racing flat but have zero experience or advice to give about others.

  5. I currently rotate through about 11 different pairs of shoes right now. I have 1 pair of Nike, 3 pair of New Balance, 1 pair of Newtons, 1 pair of Vibram, 3 pairs of Brooks, 2 pair of Addidas. I never wear the same pair two days in a row and I use a certain pair for certain types of runs. The variation I believe keeps my feet stronger and allows the foam in the shoes to recover before I use them again. Also, with rotating so many, they last longer because I dont put all the miles on just one or two pair.

      • I do have 1 pair of Nikes and I actually love them..sadly, they no longer make the Nike Run Avant and I have yet to find another pair that I like. Personally, I am not loyal to any particular brand..If they feel good on my feet, I will wear them.

        • Hmmm, I’m not familiar with the Run Avants. My loyalties are being destroyed as I ran another two miles in Brooks today. Maybe I’ll have a multi-comany collection like yours by the end of the year šŸ™‚ Hope to see you this week!

  6. I have always worn Mizuno Wave Rider’s but since I’m rehabbing from hip surgery and not able to run yet, I switched to Brooks Launch for cross training. I will be using them to transition back into running and even though I am loyal to Mizuno, I am open to the idea of a new shoe!!

    • Wishing you a fast recovery and smooth transition back into running! I think I might have tried on the Launch yesterday. They were comfy! I need to branch out more and try Mizunos someday.

  7. Hey! I’m recovering from an injury, too so I know how exciting it must have been for you to be running again. I have another week and a half off but I’m hoping to be back soon! Can’t wait and hoping for no pain.

Right now I use Asics Gel Nimbus shoes but may have to get fitted for a different pair soon. I think I need to rotate them!

  8. So I read this on my phone earlier this morning, but make too many gramatical errors to write at least decently clear response. Anyways-like I said, my first pair of shoes was Nike Pegasus and I still keep them in my rotation: between those, Newtons and Nike Frees. Though from this race I just won a pair of sketchers, so I’m curious about those too.

  9. I used to run Brooks Adrenalin, tried the Glycerin, they gave me problems. I now run Saucony Kinvara’s 2’s, I love them… I also use the Saucony, peregrine for winter and trails.. I also have a pair of New Balance minimums trail, have only run in them a few times, but walk in them a lot.

  10. Oh I’m a big New Balance Minimus Fan. Not just a big fan…like a HUGE fan. That said I have the street and trail runners in the line I bounce between. I’ve made mistakes on wearing the wrong ones on the wrong day before and it ain’t pretty šŸ™‚ That said, I can’t go back to any other shoes…even getting a new pair of Minimus shoes kind of makes me weepy….

  11. I wear Brooks Ravenna and Mizuno Wave Inspire. I kinda like the Mizuno’s a bit better, but overall I’m more loyal to the shoes that do my feet good rather than a brand name. I’m glad you had a run, even if it was only 15 minutes. That’s more than so many people!

  12. Love this, I was a Nike Pegasus devotee EXCLUSIVELY for about eight years. Then I moved to Alaska and couldn’t find Pegasus (or Nike, anywhere) and was too cheap to order them and pay for shipping. I found a discounted pair of Brooks Ghosts in my size at the outdoor/specialty store in town, and bought them precisely two weeks before a marathon. I ended up loving them. Then my mom sent me some discounted Lunarflys she’d found, and I ended up loving those, too. Now I haven’t run in Pegasus in nearly a year, and surprisingly haven’t even missed them, although I do think I’ll revisit them when I move back down south! It’s so nice to know there are a few different makes I can depend on.
